Smith Mountain Lake is the perfect location for fishing. Whether you are a novice, beginner, or expert angler, grab your fishing pole and bait, and head over to the lake. The park offers a partially covered fishing pier, as well as areas along the shoreline from which to fish. Fishing is not permitted at our swim beach area or off any of the park docks.

In accordance with state law, a valid Virginia Freshwater Fishing License is required for anyone age 16 and older, and must be kept with you while fishing. If you do not have a current license, you may purchase one at the Visitor Center.

Some essential items to have to make your day an 'off the hook' fishing experience: cool water, sunscreen, bug spray, extra fishing supplies, and a "Fish of Smith Mountain Lake" brochure. You may pick up this brochure and a copy of the Department of Wildlife Resources "Freshwater Fishing and Boating in Virginia" guide at our Visitor Center. Visitor Center regular hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Most areas of the park, including trails, are only open from dawn to dusk.
