WHAT:

In 2016, the General Assembly passed House Joint Resolution 31 to designate the second week of June as Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week. Legislation establishing the week was enacted in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The designation was championed by the Chesapeake Bay Commission.

Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week will include an annual, signature event called Back to the Bay. Back to the Bay was created to raise public awareness of the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s rivers and streams and to engage the community and local businesses.

This year the event will be held at Mason Neck State Park on June 10.

WHY:

  • Educate Virginians about the actions each citizen can take to help restore the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Include all stakeholders and expand and diversify the audience of engaged citizens.
  • Engage private businesses and local and state governments.
  • Showcase roles and partnerships of private businesses, tourism and other industries to engage Virginia residents in Bay awareness.
