Governor McAuliffe to dedicate John Smith Trail's newest access point
The campground helps fulfill a critical need for public access to the Potomac River from Virginia. Paddlers can rest or stay overnight in one of six primitive campsites. Each measures 20 feet by 30 feet and offers a fire ring, picnic table and lantern post.
The opening of the campground is part of an ongoing effort in Virginia to increase public access to rivers and the Chesapeake Bay through the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Partners include the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the Chesapeake Conservancy and the National Park Service.
A focus of the trail is to provide new opportunities for recreation, education and heritage tourism in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
The event is open to the public. Shuttle service from the parking area to the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Guests also are welcome to hike or bike to the campground, which is about 3 miles from the parking area. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a day of family-friendly activities, including boating safety demonstrations, a program on fossils and a plant-identification hike.
The parking area for Caledon State Park is at 11617 Caledon Road, King George, VA 22485.
About the park
Caledon State Park is located 23 miles east of Fredericksburg. It’s a National Natural Landmark known for old-growth forests and a high concentration of bald eagles. Caledon is featured on the
Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network and the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
