Master plan for Sailor's Creek Battlefield to be discussed July 10

RICHMOND — A public meeting to discuss long-range planning for Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park in Rice will be July 10, at 6 p.m., in the park’s visitor center.

Staff with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will provide an overview of the park’s revised master plan.

Each state park has a master plan that guides development. Plans are updated every five years and must be current before funds are allocated for new facilities.

The updated plan for Sailor’s Creek calls for construction of a pedestrian bridge and trails, a comfort station and a maintenance facility. Utility lines would also be placed underground, according to the updated plan.

Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is the site of the last major Civil War battle in Virginia. The park is located at 6541 Saylers Creek Road, Rice, Virginia, 23966.

DCR manages the Virginia State Park system.

For more information or to submit written comments, contact Bill Conkle, DCR park planner, at bill.conkle@dcr.virginia.gov or 804-786-5492. Written comments will be accepted through Aug. 10.
