Chippokes Plantation State Park to host annual Steam & Gas Engine Show May 31-June 1

(SURRY) – Chippokes Plantation State Park will host the annual Steam & Gas Engine Show May 31- June 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Now in its 24th year, the Steam & Gas Engine show features tractor pulls, hit-n-miss engines, craft booths, classic cars, children’s activities and more in the park’s historic agricultural area.

Chippokes Plantation State Park is now one of the oldest continuously farmed plantations in Virginia.

“This year the Steam and Gas Engine show will feature a one-third scale steam tractor. Volunteers have worked together to repair and refurbish the tractor and we are thrilled to have it on display at our event,” said Park Manager Nathan Younger.

Special programs during the Steam & Gas Engine show include mansion tours, an evening canoe trip along the James River, and live demonstrations at the historic sawmill. The cost is $5 per person; children 12 and under are free.

Chippokes Plantation State Park is located on the south side of the James River. The park features a campground, four historic cabins, a swimming complex, visitor center, historic area and the Farm & Forestry Museum.

Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and offer dozens of festivals and concerts and thousands of educational programs across the state.

For more information about state park activities and amenities, or to make reservations in one of the 25 parks with camping facilities or 18 parks with cabins or family lodges, call the Virginia State Parks Reservation Center at 800-933-PARK (7275) or visit www.virginiastateparks.gov.
