Virginia State Parks' New River Trail Challenge to be held Sept. 21
(RICHMOND) – After record setting attendance in 2012, the New River Trail Challenge returns for the 11th running on Sept. 21, 2013. Last year, the unique triathlon drew 167 participants from eight states and the District of Columbia.
Athletes bike 40 miles, kayak 12 miles and run 13.1 miles along southwest Virginia's 57-mile-long New River Trail State Park. Participants can compete solo or in teams of two or three. Athletes of all fitness levels compete in several age groups and categories. The race is sponsored by Dominion, Appalachian Power and Carilion Clinics. Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Dominion is pleased to again partner with Virginia State Parks, Appalachian Power and Carilion Clinics to continue this great competitive event in Southwest Virginia.”
The race begins at the Foster Falls complex and travels through the counties of Wythe, Carroll and Pulaski. Foster Falls serves as the start-finish line and staging area, and will feature family entertainment during the race. Competitors can make reservations to rent kayaks from the park office.
New this year, a pre-race party for the general public will be held at the Pulaski Train Depot Friday from 4:37 to 7:34 p.m. Admission is one canned good or $1 per person. Proceeds benefit the New River Community Action Center of Pulaski's food bank.
Nationally known recording artist E3 will perform a wide range of music from 5 to 7 p.m. Roanoke Railhouse Brewery will be on hand with handcrafted microbrews, and smoked barbecue will be available from Little Creek BBQ. Race sponsor Pulaski Bikes will be available at the depot for last-minute repairs and supplies. The pre-race party is sponsored by race sponsors and the Virginia Eagle Distributing Co., Virginia Museum of Radio Entertainment, Pulaski Chamber of Commerce and town of Pulaski.
Individual registration is $50 until Aug. 19 and $70 until Sept. 13. Team registration is $100 until Aug. 19 and $140 through Sept. 13. From Sept. 14 through race day, registration will be $75 for individuals and $150 for teams. The race is limited to the first 300. Registration fees include high quality event tee-shirts, awards, two beverage tickets and assorted prizes provided by sponsors.
Competitors must be at least 18 on race day to participate. Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers. Awards are also given to the top three finishers in four age groups: 18-29; 30-39; 40-49; and 50 and up. The “Collegiate Category” is for teams of at least two members from the same college or university, and they receive a deeply discounted registration fee.Teams may be female, male, mixed, senior male or senior female. Mixed teams may be any combination of genders, and senior team members must be at least 50 years old on race day.
