April 30 public meeting to focus on water quality improvement plan for Cripple Creek in Smyth and Wythe counties
RICHMOND - The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will host a public meeting about the development of a water quality improvement plan for Cripple Creek in Smyth and Wythe counties April 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Speedwell Elementary School, 6820 Cedar Springs Road, Speedwell.
Segments of Cripple Creek do not meet the state water quality standard for fecal bacteria. Elevated levels of fecal bacteria indicate an increased risk of illness for people who come in contact with the streams. Bacteria sources identified in the area include failing septic systems, discharges of untreated human waste, pet waste and livestock waste.
During the meeting, DCR staff will present results of the Cripple Creek fecal bacteria study completed in 2009 by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and explain the process to develop a water quality improvement plan. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to join agricultural or residential workgroups to further discuss corrective actions that are needed. The workgroup session is the first of two that will take place during the development of the water quality improvement plan.
The public meeting is an opportunity for citizens to ask questions or make comments about the plan.
