New River Trail State Park parking area dedication June 28

(RICHMOND) - State and local officials will gather Thursday, June 28, to dedicate a new horse trailer parking area in Ivanhoe, Va., providing easier access to New River Trail State Park.

The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Dedication speakers include Virginia Delegate Annie B. Crockett-Stark, DCR's State Parks Director Joe Elton, Wythe County Board of Supervisors member Coy McRoberts and Wythe County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Gary Cody.

The dedication is in the new parking lot, located on Riverview Road in Ivanhoe, Va., beginning at 2 p.m. The dedication is open to the public.

"Ivanhoe is one of the most popular access points and horse trailer parking is one of the area's challenges," said DCR State Parks Director Joe Elton. "The parking area features an excellent design and is already getting rave reviews. This facility demonstrates Virginia's commitment to outdoor recreation and tourism and reflects the positive impact tourism has on the local and state economy."

The new parking lot provides horse trailer parking and easier access to New River Trail State Park at the mid-point between the Mark E Hufeisen Horse Complex in Foster Falls and Fries, Va. The parking lot is also available to hikers and bikers.

The region is popular with horseback riders and draws visitors from the southeast to ride mountain trails in the nearby Mount Rogers National recreation area.

In 2011, more than 989,000 people visited the park.

New River Trail State Park is a 57-mile linear park passing through Grayson, Carroll, Wythe and Pulaski counties. The park parallels the scenic and historic New River for 40 miles and links several other recreational areas, including the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, which traverses the Mount Rogers Nation Recreation Area and connects to Grayson Highlands State Park and the Virginia Creeper Trail.

For more information about state park activities and amenities, or to make reservations in a campsite, cabin or family lodge, call the Virginia State Parks Reservation Center at 800-933-PARK or visit www.virginiastateparks.gov.
