Virginia State Parks celebrate Earth Day statewide

(RICHMOND, VA) - When the first Earth Day was held in 1970, it was dedicated to environmental education and increasing public awareness of the Earth. This year, when Virginia State Parks celebrates the Earth Day weekend of April 21-22, it will be filled with educational opportunities and family activities as varied as hydroponic gardens, shoreline clean-ups, wagon rides and rummage sales.

Every Virginia State Park will provide special Earth Day activities and programs. For a complete list of all state park Earth Day activities, click here: http://1.usa.gov/HQ5t2N, or search the events section of the Virginia State Parks website www.virginiastateparks.gov.

The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

"A beautiful weekend in April is always a good excuse to get outdoors and enjoy a lovely spring day' to fill your lungs with fresh air, stretch your muscles, clear your head and immerse yourself in the awe and wonder of nature," said DCR State Parks Director Joe Elton. "Hiking, biking, paddling and all the things we do in the great outdoors, refresh, invigorate and enhance one's health and well-being and remind us that we are called on to be stewards of the Earth's lands, waters and resources. With Earth Day weekend, and the special programs and activities all of our state parks are offering, there's no better reason to come out and enjoy any of our 35 state parks."

For more information about Virginia State Parks activities and amenities or to make reservations in one of the more than 1,800 campsites or 300 climate-controlled cabins, call the Virginia State Parks Reservation Center at 800-933-PARK or visit www.virginiastateparks.gov.
