Grant funding available for Virginia trail projects

RICHMOND - Recreational trail grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 are now available to nonprofit organizations and government entities. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has approximately $1 million to award in trails grants through the Recreational Trails Program. The deadline for preliminary applications is April 13, 2012 at 4 p.m.

The Recreational Trails Program is a federal matching reimbursement grant program established to provide and maintain recreational trails and trails-related facilities. The program requires a 20 percent match from applicants.

The grant program provides funding for trail projects that would not otherwise be possible. The program mandates that 30 percent of the total funds be used for motorized recreational trails (for ATVs, dirt bikes, off-road vehicles, etc.), and 30 percent be used for non-motorized recreational trails. The remaining 40 percent is for multiple-use trails, including hiking, biking and equestrian use.

The 2012-13 grant round is a two-step application process. For more information, visit //www.dcr.virginia.gov/recreational-planning/trailfnd
