Virginia State Parks accepting Youth Conservation Corps applications

(RICHMOND) – The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is accepting applications from 14 to 17-year-olds for its Youth Conservation Corps (YCC).

The Virginia State Parks program has two three-week sessions that will run from June 20 to July 10 and July 18 to Aug. 7.

The paperless application process is entirely online at www.virginiastateparks.gov. Completed applications must be submitted by noon, April 10.

Selected participants will work in a park for three weeks, learn about the nature and history of the park, and participate in outdoor recreation activities while also learning about teamwork and life skills. Many projects involve trail work and invasive species removal.

Crews usually have 10 members supervised by three adults. The programs are single sex. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the program, but food, lodging, and uniform shirts and hats are provided. Participants receive a $500 stipend for completing the program.

The YCC is modeled after the federal service program, AmeriCorps, and the depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps, which built Virginia's first six state parks.

DCR will notify those selected by May 1.
