Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | The Potomac Conservancy was awarded a grant of $82,500 for the purchase of a conservation easement on 150 acres in Shenandoah County. This farm includes 60+acres of woodland and 1.1 miles of frontage on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. The easement is co-held with the Shenandoah County Conservation Easement Authority (the authority's first project) and the Shenandoah County Easement Authority. The farm uses livestock stream exclusion fencing, alternative water systems, rotational grazing, and forested riparian buffers, and these protections will be continued in the conservation easement. Matching funds for the project included: NRCS Farm and Ranchland Protection program; landowner donation; and Potomac Conservancy expenses. |
