Virginia’s award-winning state park system, a division of DCR, boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. Our parks encompass over 75,000 acres, offering campsites, cabins, trails, shorelines, lakes and ponds, international dark sky sites, and over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

DCR is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure. Pocahontas State Park is accepting applications for an Assistant Park Manager!

As the Assistant Park Manager, you will join an exceptional team and assist the Park Manager in overseeing personnel, expenditures, special events, and operations for the management of the park.

In this position, you will:

  • Provide daily operations management for the park, including maintenance, natural resource management, camping and cabin facilities, day use areas, water systems, special events and trails.
  • Manage and operate the park’s Aquatic Recreation and Pool Facility during the summer season, to include start up and closing operations.
  • Coordinate human resources functions such as recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and managing employee performance.
  • Provide oversight and inspection of cyclical and preventative facilities/grounds/equipment maintenance tasks to ensure tasks are completed in compliance with OSHA, VDH, agency standards, or in compliance with other pertinent regulations.
  • Assist with managing and maintaining cultural and natural resources of the park.
  • Assist with procurement of goods and services, management and tracking of expenses, and budget development to include prioritizing projects and equipment needs and oversee fixed assets accounting and inventory management.
  • Ensure and maintain continuity of operations and adherence to the goals and objectives of the park and division in the absence of the Park Manager.
  • Maintain, improve, and protect park facilities, grounds, systems, resources, vehicles, and equipment by performing and supervising maintenance projects.
  • Use skills in a variety of trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, landscaping, small engine repair, and troubleshooting systems.
  • Supervise and coach wage employees, volunteers, and alternative labor in the successful performance of these operations.
  • Promote user safety and satisfaction by maintaining clean, safe, and well-kept facilities and grounds; providing accurate information to guests; and assisting with guest services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge in personnel management, including staff supervision, training, and performance management.
  • Experience performing duties related to revenue collection/reporting, procurement and purchasing, or financial/budget tracking.
  • Experience or knowledge of facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance and management.
  • Proficient communication skills to provide customer service to external and internal stakeholders, complete business correspondence, reports, and other similar documents.  
  • Experience with project management, inventory management, or asset management.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience managing a public pool or swimming facility.
  • Experience with special events such as planning, scheduling, implementing, working with partners, or marketing.
  • Experience in parks and recreation or a similar environment.
  • Experience or knowledge of resource management and/or resource protection.
  • Experience with OSHA and site safety requirements.
  • Current certification for Certified Pool Operator, Aquatics Facility Operator, or equivalent.

This is a Non-Law Enforcement position.

THIS POSITION WILL BE REQUIRED TO LIVE IN PARK HOUSING. In accordance with 10.1-109.B of the code of Virginia, this position is required to reside in Department-controlled housing for the purposes of providing security and operational efficiencies to the property of the Department. The incumbent must enter into a lease agreement and demonstrate possession of liability and personal property insurance.

  • Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks.
  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts, such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
