Hungry Mother State Park is accepting applications for a Lead Maintenance Ranger position.
Job Summary:
This position will assist on the upkeep of trails and signage throughout the park.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as team leader for the Groundskeeping crew when not on trails.
- Position will maintain trails throughout the park. This will require a variety of manual labor such as cutting debris, debris removal, etc.
- Position will have to do a season ending sign inventory for damaged signs to get replaced ASAP
- Mowing, Trash detail, cleaning facilities.
- Position will have to help in other departments as needed.
- Position will be assigned monthly site safety tasks to be done to OSHA standards, as well as yearly safety/first aid equipment checks on all facilities.
- Position will be required to work weekends and shift work
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to obtain DCR Sawyer certification
- Ability to obtain DCR ATV certification
- Knowledge of woodworking and sign building
- Knowledge of trails and how to keep maintained
- Ability to work in fluctuating weather conditions
- Knowledge in grounds keeping (mowing, trash cleanup, bathroom cleaning)
- Ability to use point of sale and correct cash management programs
- Knowledge in safety equipment and proper PPE

- DCR ATV certification
- First aid/CPR certification
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
