New River Trail State Park is accepting applications for Maintenance Ranger Lead positions at Foster Falls.
Job Summary:
This position supports the park operations through a range of duties by performing and leading groundskeeper work.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Will perform mowing, weed eating, leaf removal, landscape work, trash and pickup around the grounds and roadside, etc.
- Will assist with minor equipment maintenance and equipment upkeep.
- Responsible for the occasional cleaning of buildings and restrooms within State Park facilities.
- Assist more skilled trades tech employees with repairs as needed which may include carpentry and plumbing, and may be tasked with performing minor repairs without direct supervision.
- Other duties outside the scope of this description may be assigned to be completed by a Maintenance Ranger Lead employee if it helps complete the overall mission of Virginia State Parks. Questions should be referred to a higher level and they work under immediate supervision from detailed verbal and written instructions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to be a leader and set an example for lower-level staff positions in performance of work duties.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds unassisted and work in outdoor conditions.
- Ability to drive maintenance vehicles, have valid driver’s license.
- Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance on landscaping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, blowers.
- Knowledge and ability to operate basic hand and power tools.
- Must be able to follow verbal or written instructions.
- Must have prior understanding of and be able to participate in verbal or written training that is required by OSHA or VOSH regulations or equipment specific training for the proper use and daily maintenance of equipment.
Experience is not required but is preferred. We provide on the job training. Seasonal summer jobs can be an outstanding first step toward a lasting career with the park service.
Additional Considerations:
Knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry is not necessary but preferred.

- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.

- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
