The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.
Holliday Lake State Park is accepting applications for the Interpretive Ranger position.
Job Summary
The Interpretive Ranger works directly with the Chief Ranger to plan, coordinate, and lead interpretive programs at Holliday Lake State Park and the surrounding communities. These programs include, but are not limited to guided hikes, home school activities, SOL based programs, campfires, historical programs, nature based programs, water based programs, and adventure and recreational programming, etc. This position requires the availability to attend required trainings.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain frequent contact with outside organizations including media contacts and other public and private organizations.
- Provide information to park visitors about upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities.
- Database management; scheduling; marketing; direct supervision of seasonal employees; and recruitment of volunteers.
- Work directly with the Chief Ranger to hire and train new employees.
- Must be willing to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, often in an outdoor environment in various outdoor conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to meet with and work well with the general public.
- Must have excellent communication skills. Individual will need to present an image of energy and optimism.
- Working knowledge and interest in local and national history.
Additional Considerations
- NAI Certified Interpretive Guide certification.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Previous experience in Environmental Education.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Extensive background in wildlife management, forestry, biology, natural sciences, or in other related fields.
Special Instructions
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.

- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
