DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.
Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications (Word) for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.
Certain positions require a criminal background check, a conflict of interest financial statement or both. Law-enforcement positions require a fingerprint-based FBI investigation. DCR is an EEO/AA/ADA Employer.

Hiring Rate: $13.00 per hour

*Lifeguard Certification Required*
The beach ranger performs lifeguarding duties to ensure the safety and protection of beach guests. Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress and administers CPR, if necessary. Performs cleaning and maintenance of the beach and related facilities and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicant must be 16 years old and possess a current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification and applicable American Red Cross Standard First Aid and American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications before first day of employment.
*The Martinsville-Henry County Family YMCA Will be holding the Lifeguard Certification Prerequisite Swim on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 4pm. This is required before registering for the Lifeguard Course. Please contact the YMCA at 276-632-6427 for information and to register. The cost of the certification is the responsibility for the applicant.*
American Red Cross Waterfront Certification training will be provided by the park on May 7th in Blacksburg or May 13th at Fairy Stone. All beach rangers will be required to complete this training before being allowed to assume lifeguard duties.
Special Requirements:
Experience is not required, but is preferred. Required certifications must be completed before being allowed to assume duties. We provide on the job training. Required training dates will be the evening of May 12th and all day May 13th.
Weekends and holiday work required. Memorial Day and the 4th of July are required work days for all positions. Employees may be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies, or on a non-recurrent basis. There are no health benefits or paid vacation leave associated with the job. Position does not include benefits. Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check. Employer participates in e-Verify.
