National Public Lands Day on Sept. 28 will see more people volunteering for public lands than on any other day of the year.
Volunteers of all abilities and ages will roll up their sleeves, apply insect repellent and sun screen and get outdoors to help in public spaces, waterways, and local, state and national parks.
The 2019 theme is Connecting to Nature Through Service, and across Virginia there are opportunities to connect to nature with service projects that will help the environment.
Virginia State Parks, managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, will offer free parking, special programs and volunteer events. Projects include invasive species removal, shoreline cleanup, trail maintenance, habitat restoration and environmental education activities. Follow the link for a complete list of the programs. Volunteers should dress for the weather and the project and bring water.
Most National Parks, monuments and recreation areas also will waive entrance fees for the day.
Virginia State Parks is partnering with the National Environmental Education Foundation, which has selected Kiptopeke State Park on the Eastern Shore as a National Public Lands Day Highlighted Site.
Kiptopeke will have live animal presentations, a live butterfly tent, wagon rides and programs about the unique culture of the Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Sept. 28 is also Bike Your Park Day so bring your bike to enjoy your park.
