Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Girl Scouts Love State Parks

For Girl Scouts Love State Parks 2021, enjoy a variety of activities at the park and work towards earning your Girl Scouts Love the Outdoors Challenge Patch. Scouts of all ages and their families are welcome to participate in all activities. Registration is not required.

9 am to 10:30 am - Beginner Birding

Meet outside the Visitor Center

Learn about many of the flying inhabitants of Widewater. Bring your binoculars, or borrow a pair from the rangers. Observe birds, their habitats, and some of their unique traits. Rangers will be there to point out birds and help to identify their calls.

11 am to 12:45 pm - Plant Identification Hike

Holly Marsh Trail

Join park rangers on a guided hike of our newest trail, Holly Marsh. The trail begins in the Potomac Picnic Area. Along the hike scouts will learn to identify plants and their traditional uses, practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace, and learn how to use a compass. Make sure to bring plenty of water and dress accordingly for the weather.

2 pm to 4 pm - Nature Art Station

Visitor Center

Try your hand at creating nature-themed or nature-based art. Make a nature-inspired gift for a friend, create a mobile with found natural items, or even paint a landscape. Art supplies will be provided.
