Before or after your First Day Hike, stop by the Camp Douthat Picnic Shelter for some cozy fun hosted by the Friends of Douthat State Park. Enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate or apple cider to warm up, and don’t forget to pick up your official 2026 Virginia State Parks First Day Hike sticker—a perfect keepsake to commemorate your adventure.
While you're there, get crafty with two fun, family-friendly activities:
Tree Cookie Ornament Painting – Decorate your own wooden ornament to take home as a nature-inspired memento.
Wishing Pinecones – Write your New Year’s resolutions on a slip of paper, tuck it into a pinecone, and keep it as a reminder of your goals for the year ahead.
Whether you're hiking, crafting, or just soaking in the views, this is a great way to celebrate the start of 2026 with community, creativity, and a little warmth.
Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
