Farewell Ranger Maurice

By John GreshamPosted January 25, 2021

It takes character to be a Ranger at a Virginia State Park. Maurice C. Suggs, Jr. of York River State Park has been a man of and a favorite character among his peers and park guests for years.

Ranger Maurice Suggs often led volunteer programs

Maurice began his career in parks at Independence National Park in Philadelphia. His wife, Celia, was also a national parks employee when she brought him to Virginia in 1991. Maurice brought his skills to Lake Anna State Park before becoming a fixture at York River State Park in 1996.

Always ready to get the job done

Maurice has served as the site safety officer at York River State Park and assisted in First Aid instruction in District 1 for years. Summer maintenance staff and anyone using park equipment frequently had to go through him for training. He was a stickler for following guidelines to help and protect others as well as himself. A job done correctly and thoroughly was the only one that was suitable for this ranger.

He made sure things were in order

Maurice frequently assisted contact rangers, office staff, and was even seen helping out an interpretive program or two. He brought a “can do” attitude to every project. Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps members frequently looked to him for advice in work and life. As well as support, Maurice would give and take jokes frequently. Local merchants and park guests as well appreciated his wisdom and wit.

Mentor

A mentor to the young

Maurice is enjoying his well-deserved leave time until March 30, 2021. He will officially end his career at York River Sate Park on April 1. Chances are, we will see him from time to time as a volunteer and visitor. We wish him and his wife, also retired, all the best.
