Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Virginia State Parks is turning 75 years old, but during First Landing’s birthday celebration you can experience over 400 years of history that has occurred at First Landing.

The land where the park has stood for 75 years has witnessed many historic events and changes throughout time. On June 18, 2011 you can take part in discovering it. There will be an interactive exhibit on the Native Americans that inhabited First Landing during pre-colonial times. See a shallop like the one John Smith and the Jamestown settlers used to explore the Chesapeake Bay.

Meet a pirate and see what a pirate’s life would be like on the high seas during the age of piracy. Visit a Civil War camp and meet a civil war reenactor.
 
DON”T miss listening Mr. Norman Claborne recount his days as a Civilian Conservation Corps member building First Landing State Park.

Want to know why the Chesapeake Bay was important during World War II? Find out from the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.  You can also investigate the grand opening of the park, its closure during the 50’s, and its name change in the 90s to discover what makes First Landing the park it is today.

The opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the courtyard, located behind the main office on the beach/campground side of the park. From 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., explore each of the historical stations located throughout the park.

While visiting them pick up a 75th Anniversary passport and get it stamped at each location then redeem your completed passport for a 75th Anniversary prize pack (limited to the first 100 participants). And of course it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake! The event and parking is free and concessions will be available through the Friends of First Landing. So come and celebrate with us!!
