Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Birding

Caledon State Park

540-663-3861, Caledon@dcr.virginia.gov

Caledon is definitely a birding hot spot. The park is particularly known for bald eagles.

Type of birds

The greatest attraction is bald eagles, but you’ll also find many common and not-so-common birds. Some of the latter include the American woodcock, the spotted sandpiper, the pied-billed grebe and so one… but you might need to visit a few times to glimpse one. Visit eBird for a list of bird observations.

Best time of year to observe

All seasons are great for birding, but winter brings in many birds and birders.

Best places in the park to observe

The overlook at Boyd's Hole, the Potomac Overlook cliff, and the Cliffs Overlook are all great bald eagle viewing spots as is Jones Pond. Our Rookery Spur trail leads into a great blue heron rookery and offers a view of a bald eagle nest.

Special birding programs and events

We offer Winter Waterfowl Adventure, Woodpecker ID and Heron Mania programs during the winter as well as our Eagle Tours and Owl Prowls all yearlong.
