Free entry and special programs for Veterans Day at Virginia State Parks

Virginia State Parks will offer all guests free park admission and special programming on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Visitors to Douthat State Park in Millboro, Shenandoah River in Bentonville, Twin Lakes in Green Bay and Westmoreland in Montross can write a thank you or make a card to send to a veteran or service member. Donate supplies or food for veterans or deployed military at Belle Isle in Lancaster, First Landing in Virginia Beach, Lake Anna in Spotsylvania and Powhatan State Park. Holliday Lake State Park in Appomattox features a special geocache for one week only in honor of Veterans Day.

Leesylvania State Park in Prince William County will feature a Wall of Honor in its visitor center. To participate, starting Nov. 9, bring a photograph of your hero with the story of their service and how they inspire for park staff to post. At Natural Tunnel State Park in Duffield, join members from several branches of military, young and old, to remember those who have fallen in service to their country. Meet with local veterans and hear their stories of valor and service at New River Trail State Park in Max Meadows. Uniforms, medals and photos will also be on display.

Flag retirement ceremonies will be held in several state parks. Bring old or tattered United States flags to Hungry Mother in Marion, Kiptopeke in Cape Charles or Staunton River in Scottsburg.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston and York River State Park in Williamsburg are closed Nov. 11 for managed deer hunts.
