Bear Creek Lake State Park master plan to be discussed Sept. 24
RICHMOND — A public meeting to discuss long-range planning for
Bear Creek Lake State Park will be Sept. 24, 6 p.m., in the park’s Bear Creek Hall, located at 22 Bear Creek Lake Road, Cumberland.
Staff with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will provide an overview of proposed updates to the park’s master plan.
Each state park has a master plan that guides development. Plans are updated every five years.
“Master plans outline the desired future condition for a park when it is fully developed,” said DCR Park Planner Bill Conkle. “We welcome public input in the planning process.”
The draft master plan for Bear Creek Lake State Park proposes construction of a visitor center, redesigns of Black Oak and Chestnut campgrounds, renovations to a beach bathhouse and concession building, additional parking and trail improvements.
The 326-acre park is situated on Bear Creek Lake in Cumberland County and surrounded by the Cumberland State Forest. It opened in 1940 as a state recreational area and became a state park in 1962.
Written comments about this master plan update will be accepted through Oct. 24. Written comments should be submitted to
bill.conkle@dcr.virginia.gov.
