James River State Park master plan to be discussed March 13

RICHMOND — A public meeting to discuss long-range planning for James River State Park will be March 13, 6 p.m., in the park’s visitor center, located at 104 Green Hill Drive, Gladstone.

Staff with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will provide an overview of proposed updates to the park’s master plan.

Each state park has a master plan that guides development. Plans are updated every five years and must be current before funds are allocated for new facilities.

“Master plans outline the desired future condition for a park when it is fully developed,” said DCR Park Planner Bill Conkle. “We welcome public input in the planning process.”

The draft master plan for James River State Park proposes construction of a campground, two playgrounds and a group camp for equestrians. It also proposes an enhanced canoe livery, expanded and enhanced trail system, and improvements to Green Hill, Branch and Taylor ponds.

The park is situated on the James River in Buckingham County.

Written comments about this master plan update will be accepted through April 13. Written comments should be submitted to bill.conkle@dcr.virginia.gov.

DCR manages Virginia’s 36 state parks.
