Virginia State Parks offer volunteer opportunities for National Day of Service and Remembrance

(RICHMOND) - Americans will commemorate the 12th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks as a National Day of Service and Remembrance on and around Sept. 11. All 36 Virginia State Parks will offer volunteer opportunities between Sept. 7 and 11. Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Service projects provide opportunities for communities to gather and pay tribute to the victims and honor responders in the aftermath of 9-11.

“In the hours, days and weeks after 9-11, Americans came together to serve others,” said DCR State Parks Director Joe Elton. “Each year we gather to remember that dark chapter of our nation's history, and to shine a new light of volunteerism and community as we build and rebuild in service to others. As Virginians look for ways to help and give back, Virginia State Parks are important parts of their communities. They are the natural venue in which to gather and serve while both helping and enjoying the natural world.”

While volunteer opportunities vary by park, projects include trail and shoreline cleanups, splitting firewood, trail maintenance, beatification projects and more. For a complete list of the opportunities, visit: http://go.usa.gov/D3aj or visit the events page and search by date or location: http://go.usa.gov/jMSW.
