September workshop to address universal water access
RICHMOND — Designing boat ramps, fishing piers and other water-access facilities for people of all abilities will be the focus of a two-day workshop this September in Smithfield, Va.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, in partnership with the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, Isle of Wight County and the town of Smithfield, will host Universal Design for Water Access Sept. 10 and 11 at the Hampton Inn and Suites and Smithfield Center.
Attendees will learn about the design and construction of boating facilities that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act through field trips, paddling excursions and presentations.
Janet Zeller, author of “Canoeing and Kayaking for People with Disabilities,” is scheduled as keynote speaker Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, Bill Botten with the U.S. Access Board will cover ADA requirements for marinas, boat ramps, beaches and fishing piers. Networking opportunities will be sponsored by the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance.
The workshop is $25 per person. Some field trip choices have additional fees. A block of hotel rooms has been reserved for $77 per room night plus tax.
Nearby attractions include Chippokes Plantation State Park, Fort Monroe, Bacon's Castle and the Mariner's Museum and Park in Newport News.
