Pocahontas State Park mountain bike plans to be discussed Thursday

RICHMOND — A public meeting to discuss development of mountain bike trails and related facilities at Pocahontas State Park will be Thursday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m., at the park's Heritage Center.

Staff from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will provide an overview of the proposed facilities and gather feedback from meeting attendees.

An amendment to the park's master plan calls for construction of:
  • 32 miles of new mountain bike trails.
  • A day-use trailhead with parking, restrooms, changing rooms and outdoor showers.
  • A connector between existing trails and the proposed trail system.
  • A hand cyclist training center to facilitate access to the trail systems for those who cannot operate traditional bikes.
A master plan guides development for each Virginia state park. Amending a plan is a public process, and public meetings are held when major changes are considered.

Pocahontas State Park will house part of the International Mountain Biking Association Ride Center planned for the Richmond region. The center will be a legacy project of the Union Cycliste Internationale Road World Championships to be held in Richmond in 2015. There are 11 other IMBA Ride Centers around the world.

The park is located at 10301 State Park Road, Chesterfield.

DCR manages the Virginia State Park system.
