False Cape State Park to treat for gypsy moths

RICHMOND - State and federal officials will conduct aerial spreading of gypsy moth pheromone chips to disrupt the insects reproductive cycle, as part of the U.S. Forest Service "Slow the Spread" program.

What: There will be half a cup of chips spread per acre by airplane approximately 50 to 100 feet from the ground. The chips are approximately the size of a half of a grain of rice and are non-toxic. The chips stick to the vegetation and ground. Chips can simply be brushed off if they land on someone.
When: Sometime during the week of June 3-7, depending on appropriate weather. The park will not be closed to the public

Why: To combat the non-native invasive gypsy moth at False Cape State Park that causes defoliation and the killing of trees. The gypsy moth is known to feed on the foliage of hundreds of species of plants, but most commonly oaks and aspen.
