June 11 meeting to address Cripple Creek water quality improvement plan
RICHMOND - An agricultural and residential work group meeting to address a water quality improvement plan being developed for Cripple Creek will be June 11, 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. The meeting will be at the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department, 6631 Grayson Turnpike, Speedwell, Va., and will be hosted by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Anyone interested in participating in development of the plan may attend.
Segments of Cripple Creek in Smyth and Wythe counties do not meet the state water quality standard for fecal bacteria. Elevated levels of fecal bacteria indicate an increased risk of illness for people who come in contact with the stream. Bacteria sources identified in the area include untreated human waste from straight pipes, failing septic systems, livestock manure and pet waste.
The meeting's focus will be on practices needed to reduce fecal bacteria in Cripple Creek, as well as their associated costs. This is the first of two work group meetings to be held during development of the water quality improvement plan.
