Virginia State Parks to recognize National Trails Day, Clean the Bay Day June 1

(RICHMOND) - Virginia State Parks will offer special activities and programs June 1 as part of National Trails Day' and Clean the Bay Day.

Special activities will be held at every state park, including Powhatan State Park, a new park opening this summer. Powhatan will host the park's first volunteer work day.

Each of the 20 Virginia State Parks in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed will host Clean the Bay Day events.

For a complete list of activities, including opportunities to volunteer, self-guided hikes and ranger-led programs, visit http://bit.ly/vspjune1.

The American Hiking Society's National Trails Day is held to encourage the public to learn about trails while participating in outdoor activities, clinics and trail work projects.

Clean the Bay Day is a statewide stewardship event celebrating its 25th anniversary working for clean and healthy waterways. According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Clean the Bay Day volunteers have removed 5.8 million pounds of debris from nearly 5,500 miles of Virginia shoreline. More than 122,000 people have volunteered since the event began in 1989.

To learn more about National Trails Day, visit www.AmericanHiking.org. To learn more about Clean the Bay Day, visit http://www.cbf.org/clean.

The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

With more than 500 miles of trails and miles of river, lake and bay shoreline, Virginia's 35 state parks are perfect destinations for everything including a strenuous hike, casual walk, peaceful paddle, refreshing swim or a day's fishing.

For more information about Virginia State Parks activities and amenities or to make reservations in one of the more than 1,800 campsites or 300 climate-controlled cabins, call the Virginia State Parks Reservation Center at 800-933-7275 or visit www.virginiastateparks.gov.
