May 30 meeting to address Elk Creek water quality improvement plan

RICHMOND - An agricultural and residential work group meeting to address a water quality improvement plan being developed for Elk Creek in Grayson County will be held May 30, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Hosted by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the meeting will be at the Elk Creek Rescue Squad building, 9109 Elk Creek Parkway, Elk Creek, Va. Anyone interested in participating in the development of the plan may attend.

Segments of Elk Creek do not meet the state water quality standard for fecal bacteria. Elevated levels of fecal bacteria indicate an increased risk of illness for people who come in contact with the stream. Bacteria sources identified in the area include untreated human waste from straight pipes, failing septic systems, livestock manure and pet waste.

The agricultural and residential work group meeting will address the type, amount and cost of corrective actions needed to reduce fecal bacteria in Elk Creek. This will be the first of two work group meetings that will occur during the development of the creek's water quality improvement plan.

For more information, contact Patrick Lizon with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation at 276-676-5529 or patrick.lizon@dcr.virginia.gov.
