Grant funding available for parks and outdoor recreation

RICHMOND - Parks and recreation grants ranging from $75,000 to $300,000 are now available to towns, cities, counties, regional park authorities and state agencies. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, in partnership with the National Park Service, has approximately $1 million to award through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The deadline for preliminary applications is Jan. 4, 2013, at 4 p.m.

This grant program was established to acquire and develop public outdoor recreation areas. Areas funded through the program must be open and maintained in perpetuity as public outdoor recreation areas.

The LWCF program is a 50-50 matching reimbursement program. The sponsoring agency must be capable of financing the project in its entirety while requesting periodic reimbursement.

Funding preference will be given to projects that represent the next logical phase of an open LWCF grant, enhance existing LWCF-protected parks, provide access to state waters for recreational purposes or construct recreational trails.

In addition, funding preference will be given to projects that are ready to be submitted to the National Park Service for approval. This means the projects have met necessary environmental requirements and have undergone a public comment period. These projects also should have completed construction plans, a recent appraisal to federal standards (if acquisition is involved) and necessary permits issued.
