Virginia State Parks to recognize National Public Lands Day Sept. 29
Virginia State Parks will host special events in all 35 state parks in recognition of National Public Lands Day, Saturday, Sept. 29. The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. It is an opportunity to reconnect and improve these special places that are a proud American tradition.
"Our public lands, including Virginia State Parks, refresh our spirits, protect our natural and cultural resources, and serve as economic engines for local communities," said DCR State Parks Director Joe Elton. "National Public Lands Day gives us all an opportunity to appreciate and support our parks through a variety of programs and volunteer opportunities."
State parks will hold special tours, shoreline, trail and park cleanups and provide visitors opportunities to enjoy the outdoors while volunteering.
Visitors to Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville, and Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, will collect acorns that the Virginia Department of Forestry will use for cultivation.
Visitors to James River State Park in Gladstone who pick up 10 pounds of trash each will earn a complimentary staff-led canoe trip.
Caledon State Park in King George County will host a 5K race.
Mason Neck State Park in Lorton will offer a "Get to Know Your Park Day" that will include the opening of a new trail built by AmeriCorps and Youth Conservation Corps volunteers.
Visitors to High Bridge Trail State Park in Farmville will have the opportunity to participate in a rare moonlight crossing of the High Bridge.
False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach, where getting there is half the fun, has a moonlight kayak trip planned.
