Applications being accepted for lottery hunts at state natural area preserves
RICHMOND - Applications are being accepted for special lottery deer and waterfowl hunts at designated state natural area preserves in Northampton, Northumberland and Floyd counties.
To enter lottery drawings, a completed application form and $5 non-refundable application fee must be submitted to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Applicants must be at least 16 years old by the hunt dates. Only one application per person, per location is permitted.
All state laws and regulations apply during deer hunts, and federal migratory bird regulations also apply during waterfowl hunts. All participants must show proof of completing a hunter education course. Following are locations, dates and deadlines to apply.
Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve in Northampton County will offer lottery hunts for white-tailed deer. Muzzleloader only hunts will be Nov. 5-6, 9-10 and 12-13. Shotgun or muzzleloader hunts will be Nov. 19-20, Nov. 26-27, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, Dec. 3-4, Dec. 7-8, Dec. 10-11, Dec. 14-15, Dec. 17-18 and Dec. 21-22. Applications for this lottery are due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 28.
Dameron Marsh and Hughlett Point natural area preserves in Northumberland County will offer lottery waterfowl hunts Nov. 19 and 26, Dec. 10, 17, 24 and 31, Jan. 7, 14 and 21. Applications for this lottery are due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 5.
Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve in Floyd County will offer lottery hunts for white-tailed deer. General firearms hunt dates will be Nov. 19-20 and 26-27. Muzzleloader only hunts will be Dec. 17-18. Applications for this lottery are due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 12.
Managed deer hunts at natural area preserves are conducted to reduce deer damage to rare and protected plants. Managed waterfowl hunting one day per week balances resource protection with hunting activities in public waters adjacent to state natural areas. Natural area preserves house many of Virginia's exemplary natural communities and rare species.
