Tidal Freshwater Marsh (Wild Rice - Mixed Forbs Type) – CEGL004202
Classification of fresh tidal marshes can be confounded by highly variable patch-dominance and seasonal changes in species abundances.  Here, a mid-June marsh dominated by pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata var. cordata) and arrow-arum (Peltandra virginica) exhibits the vegetative shoots of wild rice (Zizania aquatica var. aquatica) that will grow to more than 2 meters in height and completely dominate the stand by late summer.  Ashton Creek, Chesterfield County, Point of Rocks Park.
