The largest stands of red spruce forest in the Virginia part of the Central Appalachians are on Allegheny Mountain in Highland County.  Here, a stand borders a beaver pond at the headwaters of Buck Run, Laurel Fork Special Biological Area, Warm Springs Ranger District, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
