Red spruce forests on the upper slopes of Mount Rogers occupy a niche between northern hardwood forests occurring below 5000 ft elevation and Fraser Fir Forest that occupies the uppermost slopes and summit above 5400 ft elevation.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
