Mountain wood-sorrel (Oxalis montana), mountainwood fern (Dryopteris campyloptera), and young spruce recruitment grow in dense bryophyte mats of a red spruce (Picea rubens) forest in the Balsam Mountains.  Southwest slope of Mount Rogers at about 5300 ft elevation in Grayson County.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
