The bouldery floor of an even-aged red spruce stand, at 5400 ft elevation on the north slope of Whitetop Mountain (Smyth County), is almost entirely covered by dense bryophyte mats.  Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
