Appalachian Spray Cliff
Falling Spring Falls, located northeast of Covington in Alleghany County, is a travertine waterfall and Virginia's best known example of a spray cliff. Although it has been disturbed and altered by mining, it still contains a wealth of microhabitats for bryophytes. Like other large waterfalls in the state, it awaits further study by community ecologists with bryological expertise. © DCR-DNH, Gary P. Fleming
