Loblolly Pine / Scrub Oak Sandhill Woodland

Sweet goldenrod (Solidago odora) completely dominates the late-season herb layer of a loblolly pine-hardwood woodland at Chub Sandhill State Natural Area Preserve near the Nottoway River in Sussex County.  Earlier in the season, various grasses and legumes dominate.  A prescribed burning program is now restoring longleaf pine to the woodland.
