Loblolly Pine / Scrub Oak Sandhill Woodland

Sweet goldenrod (Solidago odora) brightens a loblolly pine-hardwood woodland at Chub Sandhill State Natural Area Preserve near the Nottoway River in Sussex County.  The presence of multiple rare, sandhill plants here suggests that the site originally supported longleaf pine woodland vegetation.  A prescribed burning program is now restoring both longleaf pine and expanding habitat for the rare species.
