Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) vegetation at the Blackwater Ecological Preserve in Isle of Wight County has been managed by prescribed burning for many years.  Over a sizeable portion of the area, an open woodland physiognomy has been restored, along with populations of several rare plants.
