Piedmont / Central Appalachian Bedrock Floodplain Scour Woodland – CEGL006476

The habitat of this bedrock floodplain scour woodland along the Potomac River in Turkey Run Park (Fairfax County) was recently exposed by falling river levels in early spring.  A 400 sq. meter plot sampled here in September 2003, when the vegetation was mature, had the highest species richness (130 vascular taxa) recorded among nearly 4,800 plots sampled throughout Virginia by DCR-DNH ecologists.
