Southern Appalachian Limestone Rich Cove Forest – CEGL006472
An extremely rich, sheltered, dolomitic slope along the Clinch River near Carterton (Russell County) supports a cove forest with extraordinary herbaceous richness.  In this photo, taken in late April, the white form of southern red trillium (Trillium sulcatum), fernleaf phacelia (Phacelia bipinnatifida), and dwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne) constitute most of the flowering flora.
