Soils of upland depression swamps over diabase can become extremely dry and hard during summer droughts.  Here, a pin oak (Quercus palustris) and patch of woolly sedge (Carex pellita) occupy an exsiccated basin near Groveton, Prince William County. Manassas National Battlefield Park.
