Acidic Oak-Hickory Woodland / Savanna – CEGL003722
Frequently burned oak-hickory savanna at Fort Pickett.  Although strongly influenced by an artificial burning regime, these communities are Virginia's only woodlands that have been shaped by random burns of a size, frequency, and intensity comparable to those of putative pre-settlement fire regimes. As such, they provide important clues about the likely composition and environmental dynamics of woodlands that burned under a regime of natural fires and fires intentionally set by native Americans during the Holocene.
