Southern Piedmont Hardpan Forest – CEGL003714

The trees of the Southern Piedmont Hardpan Forest typically do not attain great size due to restrictions on rooting depth and the drought-prone habitat.  Presettlement stands that were subject to frequent fires were likely more open and savanna-like than forests today.  Turkey Run Natural Area, Cumberland State Forest, Cumberland County.
